How Self Help International (SHI) Is Making a Difference
SHI improves the quality of life for the poor in rural Ghana and Nicaragua through multi-faceted programs that address malnutrition, clean water access, agricultural improvement, youth training, and empowerment of women and girls. Their approach emphasizes sustainable solutions for long-term development.
Work of SHI
- Provides and installs inexpensive, simple, and effective water-chlorination systems developed by former Project Redwood grantee Compatible Technology International (now part of iDE Global).
- Offers training in agricultural practices; brings technology, such as drip irrigation; and provides Quality Protein Maize seeds to subsistence farmers.
- Provides training and one-on-one counseling to expectant and new mothers on best nutrition practices for the unborn and infants.
- Trains prospective women entrepreneurs and provides capital to start or expand small businesses.
Initiatives Supported by Project Redwood
2012: $25,000 to establish a farm-methods training center, and to install water chlorinators in Nicaragua.
2013: $25,000 to provide entrepreneurial training to Nicaraguan women and their older children, and to provide program graduates with seed capital for small businesses.
