In our 12 annual grant cycles, we have awarded over $2.2 million in grants to 93 projects in 22 countries on 4 continents, all aimed at mitigating poverty.

Each of the Project Descriptions provides details on the Grantee organization and focus of the project, along with indicators of impact. These Descriptions highlight Project Redwood’s role and history of involvement. The locations, names of Sponsors, and links to the Grantee’s own website are included. Child Aid is a nonprofit that has been working to improve the literacy rate among the indigenous people living in the rural villages of Guatemala. Guatemala has the highest levels of illiteracy in the entire Western Hemisphere, a situation that severely hampers the overall life choices and prospects for the population of this country. Carr Educational Foundation's Daraja Academy in Nayuki, Kenya, is a four-year secondary boarding school for girls. The inaugural class of 26 students entered as freshmen in February of 2009; the school now supports about 100 students in 4 grade levels. The girls come from all over Kenya and represent 26 of its 42 tribes. Daraja’s 60 acre campus includes housing for all students and employees, a vegetable garden, a barnyard with chickens and cows, sports fields and a nature trail.Click to Read More...

EOS International

EOS identifies low-cost, high impact technologies and manufactures easily repairable products using locally sourced materials. After installation they train the users and track and evaluate to ensure that the new technology results in expected positive changes including improving quality of life, generating income opportunities and protecting the environment. One such technology is a safer alternative to traditional ovens made by using a metal barrel supported by bricks and rebar that allows for continuous baking and requires 92% less wood. Farming Hope creates transitional employment for the homeless living on the streets or in shelters around the Bay Area. Their efforts focus on the high functioning 10% of homeless who are motivated to make their way back into a more stable lifestyle. Farming Hope provides training and skill development so that these individuals are qualified to meet job requirements, particularly in the hospitality sector. Participants earn income while they learn how to both grow food in local community gardens and then master cooking skills that will enable them to eventually work in food establishments, etc. While going through training, they serve as cooks in Farming Hope pop up dining locations. .Click to Read More...

Generation Enterprise

Generation Enterprise The seeds of Generation Enterprise were sown in 2004 when co-founder Clara Chow met a young Nigerian who wanted to start a micro-finance bank for street youth. After Chow teamed with Lily Rubin, when both were employed in McKinsey’s Social Sector Office on Economic Development, the two worked on implementing the youth-bank concept in Lagos, Nigeria, where 70% of the population lives in the slums. Haitian Educational Initiatives

Haitian Educational Initiatives In a country suffering an adult illiteracy rate of 55%, enhancing educational programs while children are still young will hopefully tackle the persistent poverty cycle so many residents face. HEI funds school tuitions and provides support with after-school tutoring, summer enrichment, and nutrition programs. The indigenous women artisans served by grantee Mercado Global have a rich history and culture of weaving, but lack access to resources and a viable market, making it impossible to earn a living from their traditional talents. These women have endured extreme poverty, brutal events during the almost forty year Guatemalan Civil War, discrimination, and a lack of economic and educational opportunities. Click to Read more...

Based in Kenya Ongoza was born out of a need to help ambitious youth gain needed skills and advisory support to improve the chances of their success. The S.O.U.L. Foundation is committed to addressing the root causes of poverty for rural women farmers. Based in Uganda, it has fostered sustainable and vibrant communities in two districts in Eastern Uganda through unique partnerships focused on education, empowerment, food security and maternal health. S.O.U.L. serves over 14,000 Ugandans in 30 villages, utilizing a development-driven model that makes community members stakeholders in their own success.Click to Read More...
