Donations in Honor or Memory
Gifts made in honor or memory of someone special will be recognized in our annual Impact Report. Simply include their name in the “In Memory” section of the credit card donation form or in the memo line of your check.
We remember Kristi Smith Hernandez (MBA ’80), who passed away in June 2025. From Project Redwood’s founding in 2006 until her cancer diagnosis in 2023, Kristi was a guiding force. Her generosity, insight, and deep commitment helped shape the organization we are today. If you’d like to honor Kristi’s legacy, we welcome gifts made in her memory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I donate to Project Redwood?
You will be joining hundreds of Stanford GSB alumni who work together to fight global poverty. Your support helps people lift themselves from poverty and create lasting change in their communities.
Since its inception, Project Redwood has provided over $6.5 million in financial and in-kind support, helping more than 1 million people around the world improve their quality of life.
How are the Global and US funds used?
Global Fund: Supports nonprofit organizations both in the United States and around the world.
US Only Fund: Restricted to supporting nonprofit projects within the United States.
Your Options: You may choose to give to either fund, or split your gift between both.
Can I choose which projects my donation supports?
Not directly, however, donors of $250 or more are invited to vote in the Spring to express their granting preferences among a slate of projects presented by our Grant Review Committee. Results of this vote, along with the Committee's evaluations, available funds, and the balance within the grant portfolio, are taken into account by the Board of Directors in making the annual funding decisions.
Is Project Redwood structured to endure and have a lasting impact?
Yes. The Stanford GSB Class of 1980 founded Project Redwood in 2006, but we have since expanded to include alumni from 40 classes spanning 50 years. Today, over half of our Board of Directors and volunteers come from non-founding classes—ensuring that Project Redwood continues to grow, evolve, and endure for the long term.
Why don’t I see Charity Navigator information for Project Redwood?
While Project Redwood meets two of Charity Navigator’s eligibility criteria—annual revenues over $1 million and U.S. headquarters—nonprofits are not rated by Charity Navigator until they have operated as independent 501(c)(3) organizations for at least seven years.
Project Redwood became an independent 501(c)(3) in July 2023. Before that, we operated under a fiscal sponsor.
Who do I contact if I have more questions?
