How Karat School Project (KSP) Is Making a Difference
KSP works to sustainably reduce poverty in Côte d’Ivoire by providing training and educational programs for women and children. It uses a unique model to address structural barriers to education and economic mobility by linking girls’ schooling, women’s income generation, and community-led support systems. The emphasis is on culturally grounded, community-centered implementation. While girls attend school, mothers receive a stipend to participate in training programs that improve their economic status.
Work of KSP
- Leverages its school as a full-fledged campus and community center, hosting evening events for students and their families.
- Offers school programs that include basic computer skills and a reading and writing program.
- Provides extra-curricular activities to keep students engaged beyond the classroom and make learning new skills fun.
- Supplies middle school girls in the community with products that allow them to continue attending school during their monthly cycles.
- Runs a Girls’ Education Incentive Farming Program that gives stipends to mothers to participate in a 6-month training programs that cover literacy, financial basics, and farming practices. It also produces food for the school and community.
Initiatives Supported by Project Redwood
2026: $30,000 to run a 9-month workforce development program to train low-income mothers in construction. Participation is tied to enrolling their girls in the Karat School.
